बलाहठादि तैलं

बलाहटामृतामुद्गमाषक्वाथे तिलोद्भवम् |
पक्वं शिरोरुजं हन्ति चन्दनामययष्टिभि: ||

Ingredients:-

पञ्च कोलैः स सिन्धूत्थैः पलिकैः पयसा समम् |

Ingredients: पिप्पलि, पिप्पलिमूल, चव्य,चित्रक, नागर one पल each as kalka, 

क्षीरम् as drava dravyam one प्रस्थम.

One pala Saindhava is added as patra paka

Sneha paka is done as per the classical method

Indications:- पलीहरोग,विषमज्वर,गुल्म.

Note:- in the preparation of क्षीरषड्पल घृत  practice of adding eithet saindhava during the paka ,or addition of saindhava as a patra paka also seen. There is another reference where in सर्ज(स्वर्जिका) क्षार is used in the place of सैंधव.

दशमूलकटुत्रयी वृषैश्च क्वथितं क्षौद्रयुतं प्रपीतमम्भ: |

मुस्तादि कषायं

There are four yogas mentioned

1.मुस्तं वत्सकबीजानि त्रिफला कटुकुरोहिणी |
परूषकाणि च क्वाथ कफज्वर विनाशन : ||

2.मुस्तं नागर भूनिम्बं त्रयमेतत् त्रिकार्षिकं |
कफवातशमनं पाचनं जवरनाशनं ||

3.मुस्ता पर्पटकं शुण्ठी गुडूची स दुरालभा |
कफवातारुचि छर्दि दाहशोषज्वरापह : ||

4.मुस्तामलक गुडूची विश्वौषध कण्टकारिका क्वाथ |
पीत सकणाचूर्ण समधुर्विषमज्वरं हन्ति ||

1.मुस्त,वत्सक बीज(इन्द्र यव),त्रिफला,कटुकुरोहिणी,परूषक

एलाकणादि कषायं


एला कणा मधुक नागरकाब्द वासा निम्बामृताम्बु दशमूलशृतःकषायः|

Ingredients: एला, कणा, मधुक(यष्टीमधु ), नागर, अब्द(मुस्त), वासा, निम्ब, अमृत,अम्बु(ह्रीबेर), दशमूल       Are taken and kashaya prepared as per the classical method

अष्ट चूर्णं

त्रिकटुकमजमोदं सैन्धवं जीरके द्वै |
 समधरणध्रृतानामष्टमो हिङ्गुभागः||

जनयति जठराग्निं वातगुल्मं निहन्ति||      
                                                                                  
Ingredients:-त्रिकटु,अजमोद,सैन्धव,जीरकद्वयं,  are taken one part each and eight parts of हिङगु powdered well and used

Indication:-अग्निमान्द्य,वातगुल्म    

Action:अग्निदीप्तिकरं  

Anupana:-घृत- here ghee is taken and mixed with the choorna and consumed along with the first bolus of the food.

बिल्वादि गुटिका

बिल्वस्य मूलं सुरसस्य पुष्पं फलं करञ्जस्य नतं सुराह्वम्|
फलत्रया व्योष निशाद्वयञ्च बस्तस्य मूत्रेण ससूक्ष्म पिष्टम्|
भुजंगलूतोन्दुरु वृश्चिकाद्यै विसूचिकाजीर्ण गरज्वरैश्च|          
आर्तान् नरान् भूतविधर्षिताश्च स्वस्तीकरोत्यञ्जनपाननस्यैः||    
                                                          
Ingredients: बिल्वमूलं, सुरसपुष्पं, करञ्ज फलं, नतं(तगर), सुराह्वं(देवदारु), त्रिफला, व्योष, निशाद्वयं  are powdered and do bhavana अज मूत्र for six याम and gulika made in the size of चणक

Indication: भुजंग, लूत,उन्दुरु, & वृश्चिक विष, विसूचिक, अजीर्ण, गर विष, ज्वर,भूतपीडा .  
   
 Method of application: अञ्जन,पान,नस्य.

Note: vilwadi Gutika is one of the most promising yoga as far as i know.Acharya expalined to make the Sasukshma Pishta of Vilwadi gutika, and it is been given in All most all visha conditions , special route of administration like Nasya and anjana are told. Reason is,in the case of visha we need a drug which is fast acting,a medicine taken orally takes to undergo pachana in Amashaya and it will take time to act so acharyas quoted route as nasya and anjana.it acts well due to its susookshmata whe n administered.In the current era every thing is polluted, so if we consider gara visha aspect in treatment vilwadi is a drug of choice for sure.

And bhavana is said for six yamas (18) hours).But some pharmacies here does bhavana for 30 days in goats urine.Studies shows that an organism that acts as broad spectrum inculcaye in it only after 27th day's bhavana.This yoga is also used instead of Antibiotics by many.

द्राक्षाभयादि कषायं

द्राक्षाभया पर्पटकाम्बु तिक्ता क्वाथं स सम्पाक फलं विदग्ध्यात् |
प्रलाप मूर्छा भ्रम दाह शोषतृष्णान्वितं पित्तभवे ज्वरे तु ||

द्राक्षा,अभया,पर्पटक,अम्बु(मुस्ता),तिक्त(कण्टकारी),सम्पाक(आरग्वध)फल

आवित्तोलादि कषायं

आवित्तोल् मलर् चुक्क् विष्णुदयिता मुकका कोटित्तूवतन् वेरुं चारणयुं करिम्पुं इवयोट्टोप्पिच्चुकोण्डङ्गने नालोन्नाय कषायनीरिलळवे मोर्कञी मून्नालकुटिच्चीटुन्नोर्क्कु पनिप्पतिल्ल घनमायुण्डाकुम्ग्नेर् बलम् ||

ആവിത്തൊലി മലർ ചുക്ക് വിഷ്ണുദയിതാ മുക്കാ കൊടിത്തൂവതൻ വേരും ചാരണയും കരിമ്പുമിവയോടൊപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ടങ്ങനെ നാലൊന്നായ കഷായനീരിലളവെ മോർകഞ്ഞി മുന്നാൾകുടിച്ചീടുന്നോർക്കു പനിപ്പതില്ല ഘനമായുണ്ടാകുമഗ്നേർബലം

Ingredients and preparation:-
आवित्तोल् (चिरिबिल्व),मलर्(लाज),विष्णु दयिता(विष्णुक्रान्ती),मुक्का(त्रिफला),कोटित्तूव (दुस्पर्श), चारण(पुनर्नव),करिम्प्(इक्षु)
Are taken and kashaya prepared by reducing to 1/4th and used for 3 days along with the rice gruel prepared in butter milk( मोर्कञी).

Indication:-सर्व ज्वर,अरुचि,अग्निमान्द्य

Action:-ज्वरघ्न,रुच्य,अगनि दीपक

पत्रंवेणुभवादि कषायं

पत्रंवेणुभवं दलं च तुलसीजातं हरिक्रान्तिजम् |
पत्रं वा सुनिषण्ढजं बदरजं पत्रं च वाटं दलम् ||
पत्रं च उत्तमकन्यकाख्य सुषवी नारंग पत्रं पृथक् |
सर्वं नागर पादिकं प्रहरति प्राग्रूपशीतज्वरम् ||

पत्र(leaves of) वेणू,तुलसी,हरिक्रान्ति(विषणुकरानति), सुनिषण्ढ,बदर,वट,उत्तमकन्य(सहदेवी),सुषवी,नारंग
Are taken 5 माष each and 1 कर्ष शुण्ठी. kashaya prepared as per the classical method and used

Indication:-शीतज्वर हर,used in प्राग्रूप of the same.In commentary it says that its the best yoga for विषज ज्वर.

Note:-सुनिषण्ढ a plant that resembles the leaves चार्ङगेरी and grows in the paddy field as a wild variety. It als used as अग्र्यौषध of प्रदर by अष्टवैद्य(vaidyamadham) family in kerala.

आलमोट्टादि योग(क्षीर कल्क)

आल्मोट्टुं चेरूलवेरुं उडने देव्यास्तथा मूलवुम् |
पालुं वीष्ती अरच्चुकोण्टेतिरवे कोरिक्कुटिक्कुं नृणां ||
ओटिप्पोमथ पक्वजूर्त्तियतिलुं पित्तप्रधानं द्रुतम् |
धीमानार्तिषु दोषजासु विहितां कुर्यात् समालोच्यतां ||

ആൽമൊട്ടും ചെറൂളവേരുമുടനേ ദേവ്യാസ്തഥാ മൂലവും
പാലുംവീഴ്ത്തിയരച്ചുകൊണ്ടെതിരവേ കോരിക്കുടിക്കും നൃണാം
ഓടിപ്പോമഥ പ്ക്വജ്ജൂർത്തിയതിലും പിത്തപ്രധാനം ദ്രുതം
ധീമാനാാർത്തിഷു ദോഷജാസു വിഹിറതം കുര്യാത് സമാലോച്യതാം.

Ingredients and preparation:-
आल(न्यग्रोध) मोट्ट्(अङगारिता-bud),चेरूला(भद्रा),देवी(सहदेवी),
Are taken 4 माष each and कल्क prepared by grinding in 2 पल of पाल्(क्षीर) as per the classical method and used internally

Indication:- विषज्वर,पित्तप्रधान ज्वर

Action:-ज्वरघ्न,विषघ्न

Note:-
While going through the yoga,
You may find that different drugs are quoted instead of what you may be learnt or practicing.Its  because of the practice in the local and also the reference book may be of local to a particular region .For example Bhunimba or Kirata told  here(in kerala)we are considering kantakari. This is because of local practice and by this there ain't have a difference . And you are always welcomed to follow the same that u have learnt or kantakari (with your logic.)

द्राक्षादि कषायं(ज्वरे)

There are two द्राक्षादि कषायं mentioned in ज्वर

1.

Ingredients and preparation:-
द्राक्षा,मधूक,मधुक(यष्टीमधु),लोध्र,काश्मर्य,सारिव,मुस्त,आमलक,ह्रीबेर,पद्मकेसर,पद्मक,मृणाल,चन्दन,उशीर,नीलोत्पल,परूषक
Are taken and kashaya, hima or phanta prepared as per the classical method .

Indication:- अनिलपित्तज-( ज्वर,मदात्यय,छर्दि,मूर्छा,दाह,श्रम,भ्रम) ऊर्ध्वग रकतपित्त,पिपासा,कामल

Anupana:- मधु,सिता,लाज

Note on जाती कुसुम वासित:-
The word जाती कुसुम वासित is attributed to hima only. prepare hima (हेमाद्रि commented-  रात्री द्रवे स्थितं) and cover it with a long plantain leaf and keep जाती flower over it and cover it again and tied well.keep over night and used in the next day.The evaporations  get mixed with the flower and imparts fragrance to the kashaya.



Vagbhata instructed to use as either phAnTa or hima. 


Arunadatta quoted it as drAkshAdi gana. 


It is always better to give kwatha churna to the patient and ask to prepare either of above and use. It will work wonders. 


AnupAna is also interesting. Though the text didnot advice or for kaphaja avastha , but given madhu as anupAna in the later part. It could be used in such conditions with madhu. 


Sugar candy can be given in either vataja or pithaja jwara. 


Laja can be given as anupAna once AmAvastha is removed and can be considered as nourishing. 


By looking into its indication ; it has covered almost all system related disorders ! So It can be used everywhere.

An overview on Arka Kalpana


Aarsha bharateeya granthas explains many ways to enhance the quality of life, both by improving health as well for curing the disease. Ayurveda abides nature’s laws, it teaches importance of ritucharya, dinacharya for the well being of humans. Timely additions are observed In Ayurvedic literature in the form of new diseases as well new medicinal plants and formulations. Acharya Sharngadhara, Acharya Bhavamisra are given many valuable additions to the science by decoding the knowledge in Ayurvedic terminologies.  Arka is such a preparation which is added into Ayurvedic literature in 16th century after Persian invasion.   

Arka Prakasha is such a book which is written in the period of 16th century, it is in the form of conversation between King Ravana and Queen Mandodari. This book is made into ten shatakas. In Arka Prakasha different ratios for distilling, reference for 196 single drugs Arka and 192 oushada yogas for various diseases and explains about varuni yantra for preparations.
Ayurvedic classics explains different methods and modalities like Urdwa, Adha, and tiryaka patana  vidhis for preparing distillation. Tiryak patana yantra is almost similar in functioning to modern day simple distillations. Distillation is dated back to 1st century AD in Alexandria, from 12th century literature references use of distillates as medicine in Unani system of medicine can be observed, which is named as Arkquites. Homoeopathy system uses distill as tinctures. Teenir from Sidha System of medicine are distills. Various eye drops and other preparations are in distilled form.
Some commonly used Yogas
Arka is a yoga which is less practiced one but still, many independent vaidyas make use of these for their clinical purposes, A traditional Ayurveda family in kerala, well known for cancer treatments uses many Arkas , like Athmagupta, vajra lata, pippali, darvee, panchakola, Mehari, Ekanayaka, jeeraka, ksheerini, arjuna, ajamod,  a well known Ayurveda practioner from south Karnataka is using rasnaerandadi kada(fermented kashaya) after distilling ,
Now a day many researches are going on arka preparations, actions of vacha , musta, jadamaya, shunti arka have been successfully established, and also use of arka for nebulizing  patients with asthmatic attacks have a shown good result. Steam inhalation in Ayurveda is same nebulizing in the native form. Gomutra arka is widely used by many Ayurvedic practitioners and is having good result on various skin disorders, Obesity and in various stages of cancer.
In Arka prakasha , Arka is been given prime place upon kashayas or any other preparations this may be due to the panchamahabhautic constitution of Arka, when preparing an arka, extracting the  vayu agni and akasheeya gunas of a particular drug along with the jala tatwa. vayu agni and akasha mahabhutas are lighter in its qualities which is having a penetratability because of its sookshma gunatwa.
Benefits of using arka – in the day today practice, in the present era very less people prefer kashayas because of its palatability, Arka is nothing but the lost part of kashaya, by adding Arka back to the kashayam during the therapeutic administration one may attain more potency to kashayas . In the economic view point arka can be prepared much cheaper than that of a kashaya, the yield during kashaya preparation is only 1/4th of the water taken but in arka it is about 3/4th of initial water. Arka is a product of simple distillation, no need of using preservatives like in the case of kashaya, even it holds good to the nature to reduce the load if condense the vapours that escaps during the preparation of kwatha, by this getting two products.
In spite of having references in classics a very few products are available in market; it will be very prejudice to say that a distillate only contains water, and volatile contents. Acharyas have explained about gangambu, i.e. Rainwater and have given the status of Amruta to rainwater, and advised its use for drinking, Remedies for all ailments are there in nature, rain water which is produced after adana and visarga (extracting the subtle good qualities, the showering it as rain) is the process which followed to prepare Arka or to distill. So can give the status of world’s first arka, with medicinal qualities are nothing but the rain water. So let’s start the practice of preparing and dispensing arka by respecting and harvesting the natural Arka….


पथ्याकट्फलादि कषायं

पथ्याकट्फलनागराम्बुद वचाभूनिम्ब धान्य द्रुमै:|
भार्ङ्गीपर्पटकान्वितै: शृतमितंतोयं सुशीतं पुन:||
मध्वाढ्यं परमाणु रामढयुतं श्लेष्मज्वरं नाशयेत्|
कोष्ठार्तिश्वसनाग्निसादकासनारुच्यास्यशोषान्वितं||

Ingredients and preparation:-
पथ्या कटफल भर्ङ्गी वचा भूनिम्ब(कण्टकारी) धान्यक  द्रुम(देवदारु)पर्पटक are taken  and Kashaya prepared as per classical method

Indication:-श्लेष्म ज्वर,कोष्ठ शूल,श्वास,अग्निमान्द्य,अरुची,आस्यशोष

Action:-शूलघ्न,ज्वरघ्न,श्वासघ्न,अग्निदीपक,रुच्य, शोष हर

Anupana:- मधु,हिंगु

Note:- मध्वाढ्य means honey in larger प्रमाण than हिंगु.

परमाणु रामढ means lesser प्रमाण than honey

Keep in mind that kashaya is सुशीतं before adding मधु as it cant be used or not to be added with hot substances,consider as विरुद्ध if does so

गुडूच्यादि कषायं(ज्वरे)

Therecare two yogas mentioned under one title

1.गुडूची सारिवा द्राक्षा शतपुष्पा पुनर्नवा |
सगुडो अयं कषायस्याद्वातज्वर विनाशन:||

2.गुडूची निम्ब धान्याकं पद्मकं चन्दनानि च |
एष सर्व ज्वरान् हन्ति गुडूच्यादिस्तु दीपनम् ||
हृल्लासारोचकश्छर्दि पिपासा दाहनाशन: |

Ingredients and preparation:-

1.गुडूची, सारिवा, द्राक्षा, शतपुषपा,पुनर्नवा

2.गुडूची,निम्ब.धान्यक,पद्मक,चन्दन

1.वात ज्वर
2.सर्व ज्वर,अग्निमान्द्य,हृल्लास,अरुची,छर्दी,पिपासा,दाह

गोपांगनादि कषायं

गोपांगना कमल चन्दन सेव्य विश्व यष्टी जलोत्पल मधूक शतावरीभि:|
सिधं सुशीतमनुमाक्षिक शर्कराढ्यं पित्त्ज्वरं जयति तृणाढ्यमम्बु||

Ingredients and preparation:-
गोपांगना(सारिवा),कमल, चन्दन, सेवय(उशीरा), विश्व(शुण्ठी), यष्टिमधु, जलोत्पल(हल्लक),  मधूक,शतावरी

Indication:-पित्त्तज ज्वर,तृट्,दाह

Anupana:- माक्षिक, शर्करा

Action:-ज्वरघ्न,तृषघ्न,दाहघ्न

पञ्चमूलादि कषायं

बिल्वादि पञ्चमूली च गुडूच्यामलके तथा कुस्तुम्बुरु समोह्येष कषायो वातिके ज्वरे||

Ingredients and preparation:-
बिल्वादि पञचमूल-(बिल्व,अग्निमन्थ,श्योनाक,पाटल,अरलुक)
गुडूची,आमलक,कुस्तुम्बुरु(धान्यक)

Are taken and kashaya prepared as per the classical method

Here the word समोह्येष refers to "taken together"

Indication:- वातिक ज्वर

पाठाग्निमन्दादि कषायं and वासामृतादि कषायं

पाठाग्निमन्थ बृहतीद्वय नागराणां छिन्नोद्भव मगधमूल कलिंगकानां
वासामृतांबुद पटोल महौषधानां
कवाथं पिबेदिह मरुत्प्रभवे ज्वरे तु||

Ingredients and preparation:-This shloka has two preparations

1.पाठा,अग्निमन्थ,बृहतीद्वय(बृहती,कण्टकारी)नागर(शुण्ठी), छिननोदभव(अमृत), मगधमूल(पिप्पलीमूल), कलिंगक(इन्द्रयव),

2.वासा,अमृत,अम्बुद(मुस्त),पटोल,महौषध( शुण्ठी)
are taken and Kashaya prepared as per classical method.

Indication:- वातिक ज्वर

किरातादि कषायं

किरताब्दमृतोदीच्य बृहतीद्वय गोक्षुरै:|
सस्थिरा कलशी विश्वै: क्वाथो वातज्वरापहं||

Ingredients and preparation:-
किरात(कण्टकारी),अब्द(मुस्त),अमृत,उदीची(सह्रीबेर),बृहतीद्वय(बृहती, कण्टकारी) स्थिरा(शालपर्णी) ,कलशी(पृश्निपर्णी),विश्व(शुण्ठी)
Are taken and kashaya prepared as usual method and used

Indication:- वातिक ज्वर

Note:-As  कण्टकारी comes twice in this preparation it should be doubled and used.

तोयतोयदादि कषायं

तोयतोयद भूनिम्ब पाठा धान्यमहौषधै:|
कृत: कषाय: सर्वेषां ज्वराणां पाचनं परं||

Ingredients and preparation:-
तोय(ह्रीबेर),तोयद(मुस्त),भूनिम्ब(कण्टकारी),पाठा,धान्यका,महौषध(शुण्ठी), are taken in equal quantity and decoction is prepared as per the classical method

Indication:-सर्व ज्वर,दोष कोप

Action:-ज्वरघ्न,दोषपाचन

अमृतोत्तरं कषायं / नागरादि कषायं

नागरामृतहरीतकी क्रमात् नागहस्तनयनांघ्रि भागश: साधुसिद्धमुदकं सशर्करं नाशयत्यखिलदोषजं ज्वरम्||

Ingredients and preparation:-
A beautiful शलोक  that reveals authors interest in writing puzzles.
Rather than the ingredients this shloka formed on a उपमा.

Here नाग refers to गज, ie,अष्ट दिक गजानि (8 elephants in 8 directions)

हस्त refers to its upperlimbs (two front legs and a trunk)

नयन means the eyes of them

Calculation of quantity of  ingredients :-

अंघ्रि  means पाद ,ie 1/4th part of said substance

नागर अमृत हरीतकी should be taken in respective order of नाग हस्त नयन and its अंघ्रि

1.So amount नागर is as of अष्ट दिक गजानि (8 elephants in 8 directions) and its अंघ्रि
ie,  8×1/4 =2 parts

2. अमृत - अष्ट दिक गजानि  have 3 हस्त each(2 front legs and trunk ) ,so 24 in total. Its अंघ्रि means
24×1/4=6 parts

3. हरीतकी - अष्ट दिक गजानि  have 2

नयन each,16 in total,its अंघ्रि is

16 ×1/4=4 parts

षडंग पानीय

घन चन्दन शुण्ठ्यम्बु पर्पटोशीर साधितं|
शीतं तेभ्यो हितं तोयं पाचनं तृट् ज्वरापह:||

Preparation and Ingredients:-
मुस्ता,चन्दन,नागर,ह्रीबेरा,पर्पट,उशीरा, should be taken in equal quantity and preapre paneeya as per classical method

Indication:- आम,दाह,ज्वर

Action:-आम पाचन,ज्वरघ्न

Reference:- Ashtanga Hrudaya-Jwara chikitsa

मुस्तपर्पटोशीर चन्दनोदीच्यनागरै:|
शृतशीतंजलं देयं पिपासा ज्वर शान्तये||

Reference:- Charaka samhitha-Jwara chikitsa

Note:-
Here charaka consider पिपास among the indications

Permutations and combinations of ingredients in षडंग पानीय :-

1.Quantity of चन्दन to be increased in case of रक्तपित्त
2.पर्पटक should be more while in पित्तज ज्वर
3.आतिसारी can be given  with increasing the quantity of मुस्त
4.उशीर,ह्रीबेरा are to be selected with quantity  rise in case of दाह,मोह
5.बिल्व,धान्यक to be added extra in छर्दी
6. प्रमेह can be treated by  षडंग पानीय prepared  by each of the ingredient taken of 6 निष्क each
7.बलामूल is the choice of drug to be added in case of क्षत
8.अंकोल,as always,is the best choice in case विष ,to be aded.

निशु:ण्ठी षडंगोदक:-
1.ह्रीबेर चंदनोशीर मुस्त पर्पटकै: शृतम |
केवलं शृतशीतं वा दध्यात्तोयं पिपासवे ||
                 - अष्टांग हृदय रक्त पित्त चिकित्सा

षडंग पानीय prepared with out शु:ण्ठी
Useful in आतिदाह,प्रज्ञानाश,विरेचन वमन अतियोग

2.ഷഡംഗം ചുക്കു കൂടാതെ സാമൃതം പിബേത് നൃണാം.
പനിക്കും വാതരക്തത്തെ തടുക്കും
നോവുമില്ലയാം.

षडंग पानीय adding अमृत instead of शुणठी  is good for वात रक्त, ज्वर, शूल

3. चन्दन पर्पटादि कषायं (विसर्प चिकित्सा - सहसर्योगं)

चन्दन पर्पटक अमृतवल्ली सेव्य जल अंबुद धान्यक सिद्ध पुष्करं उग्र विदाह विमिश्रं स्फोटमशेष अपोहति सद्यः ||

चन्दन,पर्पटक,सेव्य(ह्रीबेर), जल(मुस्त),अंबुद(उशीर), धान्यक,अमृत is good in उग्र विदाह,स्फोट.And also in लघु मसूरिका,सन्निपात ज्वर, and can be used as drinking water addictive in आदान काल.It also pacifies the sun burn rashes.

Note:- here the word पुष्करं meant to be water

Shadanga etc sheeta kashaya has to be made in 1 prastha water added with 1 karsha raw drug. It is then boiled and cooled to half and used.
